MARTIAL ARTS SPORTS STRENGTHEN WITH SPORTSCOTLAND FUNDING

Two governing bodies representing martial arts in Scotland have received a combined £43,000 in sportscotland funding.

An investment of £40,000, of which £30,000 is from the sportscotland Lottey fund, will go to Scottish Karate for player improvement, club and organisational development of the governing body and the sport’s medal success strategy. The main priorities for Scottish Karate in 2006/07 will be to develop and raise its profile, specifically with local authorities, modernise its administration to support its 10,500 association and club members, and further develop and educate its coaches.

Last year proved successful on the world stage in Scottish karate, with Calum Robb, age 21, winning silver at the World Junior Championships (Limassol, November 2005) and a bronze medal win in the Junior European Championships (Serbia, February 2006) for James Nelson, age 19. The governing body’s performance plan contains detailed training and competition for the Seniors, Juniors and Cadets for the next year as well as a set of comprehensive targets for the squads. Scottish Karate will also continue to utilise a health, fitness and nutrition programme drawn up by Dr Neil McFarlane of Glasgow University.

Lottery funding of £3,000 for Ju Jitsu will go towards organisational development of the governing body. Developed in Japan, Ju Jitsu is an art of weaponless self-defense which uses throws, holds and blows and derives added power from the attacker’s own weight and strength.

Julia Bracewell OBE, Chair, sportscotland, said: “I am pleased to announce sportscotland investment into Scottish Karate and the Scottish Ju Jitsu Association.

“Both governing bodies are ardently working to enhance their organisational development and increase overall club membership and youth participation in Scotland.”
